Top Ingredients to Avoid in Beauty Products

Label Reading 101: How to Spot Toxins in Beauty Products

Did you know the average woman uses over 12 personal care products everyday - and many contain ingredients linked to hormone disruption, allergies, or even cancer?

If you're switching to a low-tox lifestyle, your beauty routine is a great place to start. But don't be fooled by "clean", "green", or "natural" branding. The truth is in the ingredient list.

Top Ingredients to Avoid in Beauty Products:

Here are some of the worst offenders in makeup, skincare, haircare, and personal care.

1. Fragrance/Parfum

  • One word can hide dozens of chemicals
  • Linked to hormone disruption, skin irritation, and allergic reactions
2. Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, etc.)

  • Used to preserve shelf life
  • Mimic estrogen in the body and disrupt hormone function
3. Phthalates

  • Often hidden in "fragrance"
  • Can impact reproductive health and hormone levels
4. PEG Compounds (e.g. PEG-100 Stearate)

  • Used as thickeners or moisturizers
  • Often contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen
5. Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde Releasers

  • Watch for: DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea
  • Known carcinogens used as preservatives
6. Talc

  • Especially in powders and eyeshadows
  • Often contaminated with asbestos unless explicitly stated otherwise
7. Silicones (e.g. Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane)

  • Create a smooth feel but can clog pores and trap bacteria
8. Artificial Dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1)

  • Synthetic colorants often derived from petroleum
  • Linked to allergies and behavioral issues
9. Mineral Oil/Petrolatum

  • Byproducts of petroleum - may be contaminated with carcinogens
  • Common in moisturizers and balms

If you're not too overwhelmed by this list of toxic ingredients, I will dive a little deeper into more harmful ingredients below:

More Harmful Ingredients to Avoid in Beauty Products:

1. BHA and BHT

  • Used as a preservative
  • Linked to skin irritation, endocrine disruption, and potential carcinogenic effects
2. Triclosan/Triclocarbon

  • Antibacterial agents once common in toothpaste and deodorant
  • Can interfere with hormones and contribute to antibiotic resistance
3. Ethanolamines (DEA, TEA, MEA)

  • Used to adjust pH or as emulsifiers
  • May form carcinogenic nitrosamines when combined with other ingredients
4. Coal Tar/P-Phenylenediamine (PPD)

  • Found in some hair dyes and dark mascaras
  • Known carcinogen and skin allergen
5. Oxybenzone & Octinoxate

  • Sunscreen filters
  • Hormone disruptors and harmful to coral reefs
6. Retinyl Palmitate (synthetic Vitamin A)

  • Sometimes found in anti-aging or sun products
  • May speed the development of skin tumors when exposed to sunlight
7. Aluminum Compounds

  • Common in antiperspirants
  • Potentially linked to breast cancer and neurotoxicity (still debated, but worth avoiding)
8. Tetrasodium EDTA

  • Used to stabilize formulas
  • Doesn't penetrate the skin deeply but can enhance absorption of other harmful chemicals
9. Benzophenone & Derivatives (Benzophenone-1, -3, etc.)

  • Used to protect products from UV light
  • Linked to endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity
10. Synthetic Musks (Galaxolide, Tonalide)

  • Used in fragrances
  • Persist in the environment and may accumulate in the body

Look for brands that:
  • Use full transparency (no hidden fragrance blends).
  • Are certified EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, or USDA Organic.
  • Keep formulas minimal and plant-based.
